DETECTION OVERVIEW
Risk Factors
File transfers can easily be managed with BITS, which is a service available in all Windows environments. When a client downloads a suspicious file, particularly an executable file, there is a risk that the file is malware or malicious code. Attackers can leverage malware to support their operations, such as maintaining control of compromised devices, evading defenses, and running commands to achieve attack campaign objectives.

BITS is a Windows service that manages the transfer of files to and from HTTP servers and SMB file shares. An attacker can transfer malicious files to a compromised client through the BITS service. After the malicious payload from the file runs, the attacker can move laterally and conduct more attacks.
Quarantine the device while checking for indicators of compromise, such as the presence of malware
Investigate unusual file downloads to minimize potential damage
Block inbound and outbound traffic from suspicious hosts at the network perimeter
