DETECTION OVERVIEW

Internal ICMP Tunnel Activity

Risk Factors

Exchanging data between a victim and a command-and-control (C&C) server through an ICMP tunnel is slow and less reliable when compared to other types of C&C tunnels. However, the presence of an ICMP tunnel could indicate a persistent attack. The ultimate objective of a persistent attack, such as data exfiltration, could have a significant impact on a business or organization.

The system might change the risk score for this detection.

Attack Background

Ping is a tool that determines the connectivity of a device with the ICMP protocol. An attacker can establish a C&C tunnel over ICMP to maintain communication with a compromised client on the network. The attacker injects a payload that contains arbitrary data, such as malicious code, into the ping packets. The compromised device might respond with another ping payload that contains data.

Mitigation Options

Configure firewalls to block outbound pings to external endpoints
Provision hosts to communicate over authorized interfaces
