DETECTION OVERVIEW

Data Exfiltration to Slack

Risk Factors

Attackers frequently seek valuable data to steal, and data can be easily transferred without advanced tools or techniques to well known services. When data is transferred to trusted services such as Slack, Dropbox, Discord, or GitHub, attackers can evade detection. After valuable data is successfully exfiltrated, there can be significant negative effects on the reputation and revenue of an organization.

The system might change the risk score for this detection.

Attack Background

Data exfiltration is the transfer of valuable data to unauthorized users outside of the network. To blend in with normal activity, attackers can transfer valuable data through legitimate services that are a part of routine business operations. For example, Slack is a common messaging service in enterprise environments. Slack also supports data transfers. An attacker can hide their activity by establishing a TLS connection to an external IP address with a server name indication (SNI) that specifies a Slack domain. The attacker transfers one or more files within the encrypted connection.

Mitigation Options

Implement strict rules for outbound traffic on devices that contain valuable data
Implement strict audit controls to log every action taken on important documents
