An ecommerce retailer was experience rapid growth on their online infrastructure. A storage vendor had convinced this manufacturer that they needed a major refresh to meet the growth of their storage requirements. The greatest point of impact was the database storage infrastructure. The storage administrators knew that storage I/O could have a double impact on application performance since it affects both the storage system directly (the databases), as well as the network via saturation due to excessive transfers. The storage administrators had created a dashboard to monitor NFS activity to allow them to easily identify file I/O outside of normal, expected parameters. This let them identify activity that negatively affected their app performance. In the case of the latest backup slowdown, an admin had mistakenly configured full log backups instead of incremental. The dashboard provided real-time visibility to key data, bytes in & out by file and filer, transaction types by file and request count by file. the additional traffic full full log backups was having a serious, negative impact on performance. The team further refined their dashboards to track and analyze NFS usage irregularities.
