Corvil streaming analytics provides a niche solution focused on a small segment of the financial industry. They've done well in this market because they've architected their solution specifically for this use case, however, their buffering architecture does not scale to meet the sustained throughput required in today's dynamic IT environments.
The number of enterprise protocols Corvil supports is very limited, and few are analyzed in real-time. Post-processing data quickly becomes a performance limitation that impacts usability. Without the ability to do full-stream reassembly and SSL decryption you have a gaping hole in visibility and can't provide full value.
"Visibility" isn't a term ExtraHop throws around loosely.
Corvil provides 30+ enterprise plugins for protocol support. When you look more closely, you'll find that applications are mapped to ports for identification and not all are decoded. This just doesn't stand up to the 50+ enterprise protocols ExtraHop decodes, auto-discovers and classifies today. ExtraHop also parses TCP and UDP traffic using our Universal Payload Analysis (UPA) functionality.
Just supporting these protocols isn't enough. ExtraHop provides over 3,500 built-in metrics and the ability to create custom metrics through triggers. For perspective, Corvil provides only a few hundred metrics and extremely limited customization.
ExtraHop extends this visibility past the application into Real User Monitoring (RUM), providing W3C metrics like page load time, server processing, and perceived load time. No other network performance management or wire data solution provides this extended visibility in a unified solution.

In the real world, you have fragmented packets, lost packets, and out-of-order packets. Full stream reassembly means that ExtraHop puts everything back in order in real time, before writing to disk. That gives you the highest level of real-time accuracy so you can make better decisions, and make them faster.
The simple setup of ExtraHop's real-time stream analytics platform means you're accessing your wire data faster—and seeing value sooner.
Because of their buffering architecture, Corvil can't realistically claim to do real-time analysis on any useful volume of data at sustained throughput.
Corvil's best visibility is in L2-L4. That's not enough for real-time ITOA in the modern enterprise. You need full-stream reassembly for L2-L7 in real time. Corvil doesn't do that.

When you're comparing solutions, be sure you're getting the right information from every vendor. You can't really compare products based on the number of ports and server size — that would be like buying a car based on the number of wheels and doors it has and ignoring its performance.
When comparing pricing, be sure you know what's included. Corvil's pricing doesn't include the hardware, so if you're comparing their cost to the cost of other solutions that do include hardware, your comparison will be off. A fair and common comparison is based on performance and functionality—this is the only true way to measure value.
