Report from TRAC Research Says IT Teams Spend 46 Hours per Month in "War Room" Troubleshooting Sessions; ExtraHop Networks Solves This Problem by Delivering Actionable APM Information

SEATTLE, WA – June 26, 2012ExtraHop Networks, the leading provider of network-based application performance management (APM) solutions, announced a new report from TRAC Research detailing the performance management challenges organizations face in today's increasingly dynamic and complex IT environments. TRAC's research finds that very few APM solutions are able to turn data into actionable information and that end-user experiences are regularly suffering from application performance anomalies that can be prevented with APM solutions like the ExtraHop system.

TRAC's report, Improving the Usability of APM Data: Essential Capabilities and Benefits, found that 61 percent of organizations using traditional APM tools are unsuccessful the majority of the time in preventing performance issues from impacting their end users. As a result, these companies spend an average of 46.2 hours each month trying to figure out how to remediate application outages and performance degradations. Furthermore, respondents cited numerous shortcomings of traditional APM solutions, including the following:

  • Time-consuming correlation of performance data across multiple APM platforms (63%)
  • Too much irrelevant data (61%)
  • False positives (42%) and false alarms (32%)
According to TRAC Research, respondents' inability to meet these challenges negatively affects the credibility of the IT organization, the company's brand and reputation, and customer satisfaction.

"Without the right APM technologies in place, application performance challenges can significantly hamper or damage the business," said Bojan Simic, TRAC Research President and Principal Analyst, and author of the report. "APM tools must deliver four key abilities in order to turn their data into actionable information: customizable views into performance data, root-cause analysis based on cross-tier correlation, automated detection of anomalies, and predictive analytics. ExtraHop's network-based APM solution provides unique capabilities for delivering the actionable information to companies that need to prevent performance problems from happening in the first place and keep customers and business stakeholders happy."

TRAC's research also found that 55 percent of organizations identified the inability to customize performance-data views for different stakeholders as the biggest challenge in making APM data useful. However, with ExtraHop's Application Inspection Triggers (AIT) technology, organizations gain access to an unrivaled level of customization for real-time network and application management. Using AIT in the ExtraHop system, IT teams can track specific performance metrics and deliver tailored reports to the right people at the right time. In fact, in a second report also released today from TRAC Research, Application Inspection Triggers: Providing the Right APM Data, to the Right People, at the Right Time, Simic notes that the flexibility found in Application Inspection Triggers, combined with ExtraHop's non-invasive, network-based APM approach, "effectively deals with one of the key challenges of application performance management: improving usability of application performance data."

"Turning data into actionable information is the surest way to prevent the performance issues identified in TRAC's latest APM research," said Jesse Rothstein, CEO and co-founder of ExtraHop Networks. "Our focus on delivering actionable information was a big driver behind developing the Application Inspection Triggers technology, which helps to customize performance monitoring and make sense out of the growing volume of performance data. Our customers use ExtraHop's AIT to detect performance issues specific to their environment before they can impact end users and the business."
