SEATTLE, WA - February 24, 2016 – ExtraHop, the global leader in real-time wire data analytics for IT intelligence and business operations, today announced that the award-winning Phoenix Children's Hospital is using the ExtraHop platform to manage, control, and optimize the performance and availability of its complex infrastructure, which includes more than 180 different vendor applications and over 4,000 endpoints spread across more than a dozen facilities.
In order to support Phoenix Children's core mission of providing outstanding care to children and their families, over the past four years the IT department has embarked on an ambitious expansion program. In that time, they've grown the number of servers tenfold, built an enterprise data warehouse with over 1,600 self-service reports and datasets that support core clinical and operational workflows, and initiated a large scale electronic health records (EHR) deployment with Allscripts, among other projects. Through it all the IT staff has stayed small, growing from 60 to just 110 in the same time period.
"One of the biggest challenges for Phoenix Children's has been figuring out how to scale up our IT infrastructure without scaling employees at the same rate," says David Higginson, CIO, Phoenix Children's Hospital. "Without ExtraHop, we'd need to increase the headcount on our infrastructure team by at least 30 to 40 percent in order to manage our growing and increasingly complex infrastructure," says Higginson. "With it, we're avoiding about $600,000 a year in staffing costs alone."
Phoenix Children's also uses insights from wire data to work more efficiently with its IT service providers, including its core EHR provider, Allscripts. "When users call up and tell us the EHR is running slow, it's not enough for us to say, 'Well, everything looks good on our side.' That doesn't solve the problem, and it certainly doesn't help clinicians or patients," says Higginson.
With ExtraHop, Higginson and his team can verify where the problem is originating and deliver that data to the hosted services provider, providing specific feedback that can significantly improve mean time to resolution.
"David Higginson is a CIO, but spend five minutes with him and it's clear that his top concern is taking care of children," said Erik Giesa, SVP of Marketing, ExtraHop. "With ExtraHop, David and his team have real-time insight into the performance, availability, and security of every application and device they manage, from databases to all connected devices like drug pumps. With that level of visibility, the team can spot issues immediately, understand the impacts on other systems, and address them before they impact clinical workflows or patient care. At ExtraHop we love the fact that we get to partner with Phoenix Children's on helping realize their vision of being the Southwest's premier pediatric center bringing hope and healing to children and their families."
