ExtraHop's Application Delivery Assurance System Now Monitors Every Major Database System, Including Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and DB2
SEATTLE, WA – March 7, 2011 – ExtraHop Networks, a leading provider of network and application performance management (APM) solutions, today announced support for IBM DB2, the second-most popular enterprise database system. With the addition of DB2, the ExtraHop Application Delivery Assurance system now supports all seven major enterprise databases, including open-source and premium database systems from major vendors such as IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Sybase, and PostgreSQL.
The addition of DB2 rounds out ExtraHop's support for the top three providers, IBM, Oracle, and Microsoft, which, according to Gartner, account for more than 87 percent of worldwide revenues for the relational database market in 2009.* With today's announcement, ExtraHop customers now will be able to monitor database transactions in real time without having to run invasive tools such as SQL profilers and agents, which tend to degrade performance.
"Databases are at the nexus of today's modern infrastructure, and consequently, when application performance begins to slow, the database administrator usually gets the blame," said Jesse Rothstein, CEO and co-founder of ExtraHop Networks. "The problem with most of the database-specific troubleshooting tools on the market today is that they consume too many system resources, rendering them largely ineffective for running in a live production system. Because the ExtraHop system takes a completely passive approach, database performance is not impacted, enabling the database administrator to pinpoint issues in a fraction of the time without having to worry about bogging down the entire system."
Modern database systems have become increasingly complex due to constant interactions with application, network, and storage layers. By monitoring all tiers the ExtraHop system becomes a powerful triaging tool. Database-performance issues, such as lack of visibility into production systems and the inability to identify and correlate root-cause problems, often result in the degradation of critical applications and the unnecessary purchase of additional hardware. The database market is estimated at about $21 billion a year.* According to Donald Feinberg, vice president and distinguished analyst, Gartner, this is set to grow, and as such, these issues will only escalate.
"Despite the volatile economy over the past couple years, we've seen the data warehouse database management system (DBMS) market continue to grow," said Feinberg. "We believe the data warehouse DBMS market will continue to change in 2011 in order to fulfill the demand for high speed, lower latency, and large volumes of data brought about by new, high-value applications. Application performance management vendors supporting the top-tier DBMS providers are well-positioned to address this increasingly important market segment by providing deep insight into the performance of large-scale databases and their associated systems."
The ExtraHop Application Delivery Assurance system is a passive network appliance that is capable of identifying database issues in minutes, including the ability to fine tune database performance and provide proactive early warning. The ExtraHop system performs sophisticated network-traffic analysis to ensure that business-critical transactions do not fail. While many tools rely on legacy technologies, such as NetFlow collection, SNMP polling, custom performance agents, or active service checks, the ExtraHop system performs full-stream reassembly and full-content analysis to extract and archive valuable performance and health metrics in a real-time datastore.
Unlike other database management systems, the ExtraHop Application Delivery Assurance system is sold as an all-inclusive appliance. A single ExtraHop appliance can analyze and monitor more than 1,000 database servers with no per-server or per-seat licensing fees. In addition to providing full coverage for all of the major open-source and premium databases, the ExtraHop system also provides deep visibility across all tiers, from the application layer all the way down to storage systems and directory services.
