Meet Eric, a principal software engineer with ExtraHop since 2011. We caught up with Eric to talk about life at ExtraHop, the unification of North and South Dakota, and the particular joys of trying to drive the marketing team crazy.
Q & A With an ExtraHop Software Engineer
What brought you to ExtraHop?
Today I took the 29 bus, but sometimes I take the 13.
Seriously though, I knew several early employees, including the co-founders, from working at F5. One day I saw Raja at a mutual friend's BBQ. We chatted and at one point he suggested I apply to ExtraHop. I took up his suggestion and now I've been here for over 4 years.
Windows, Mac, or Linux?
Linux at work, Mac at home, and I think my XBox runs some sort of bizarro version of Windows.
Kirk, Picard, or Janeway?
Brunch with Janeway, dinner with Picard, and bar hopping with Kirk.
Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Search
What keeps you at ExtraHop?
The opportunity to give marketing nonsensical answers on a questionnaire about working at ExtraHop.
Marvel or DC?
Marvel for movies and DC for videogames about Batman.
Bond or Bourne?
Bourne as a tour guide and translator. Bond for a poker buddy.
What's the coolest thing you've done as an ExtraHopper?
Convinced about a half dozen co-workers to go on stage to do standup comedy...and recorded every single one.
Gadget you couldn't live without?
Uhh...none really.
First computer you ever owned?
A 286 with a monochrome amber monitor.
First mobile phone?
Motorola Timeport.
Skiing or snowboarding?
Neither. Going to college in Rochester, NY destroyed my ability to enjoy snow.
Best gadget ever made?
Inspector Gadget.
Sci-Fi or Fantasy?
Either depending on mood and quality of execution.
What do you want to be known for?
I want to go down in history as the man that finally united North and South Dakota.
Cats or dogs?
I don't even like taking care of plants. I probably shouldn't be responsible for something that can feel sadness.
Numbers or letters?
Roman numerals
Spicy or mild?
Depends on the food. Spicy Indian food = delicious. Spicy whisky = Fireball.
Seahawks or Sounders?
I prefer participating in sports rather than watching them.
House Stark or House Lannister?
House Tyrell
