User experience monitoring (UEM), alternatively referred to as user experience management or end-user experience monitoring, is a relatively recent segment of application performance management (APM) that provides an “outside-looking-in” view of application performance.
UEM is focused on web applications, providing detailed tracking about how users interact with the web application. Marketing and IT teams use UEM solutions to identify areas for improvement in the end-user experience. For example, marketing teams can replay user paths and determine the impact of poor application performance, such as specific users and geographic areas affected and which pages caused an issue.
UEM tools use network appliances to capture and analyze HTTP transactions headed to and from web servers. Because they are primarily used by marketing professionals focused on front-end experiences, these UEM tools offer limited insight into the back-end application infrastructure, such as the network, load balancer, database, and storage tiers of the application. APM solutions can complement UEM solutions by providing an “inside-looking-out” view and helping to quickly pinpoint the root cause of a problem within the application infrastructure.
