Network performance management (NPM), alternatively referred to as network performance monitoring, refers to a category of IT management practices and technology that helps to ensure the reliable and speed delivery of application traffic between network nodes and to end-users.
NPM tools provide important information to help network management teams optimize network performance and conduct forensic investigations into application delivery problems. Oftentimes, network teams use these NPM tools to establish innocence in the event of an application slowdown.
Because network teams are in part responsible for application performance as seen by the end user, they need insight into application performance from the network point of view, as opposed to the host and system point of view. To meet this need, traditional NPM vendors have attempted to provide more application-specific functionality to their products and adopted “application-aware” marketing language to describe their solutions.
